Diamond and Square framework
Added by Michael Bromage on July 15, 2024 at 9:17 pm.
Tom Eisenmann’s interesting model for business development can also be used to help people develop their creative projects. From his book: Fail-safe Startups aka Why Startups Fail.
Good commentary by Russell McGuire on Medium including insightful comment from Tom Eisenmann: “Russell: Thanks for this review of the diamond-and-square framework. I developed it to support analysis of early-stage startups in a manner consistent with the definition of entrepreneurship we use at Harvard Business School: pursuing novel opportunity without having — at least initially — all the resources required to capitalize on the opportunity. Given this definition, I saw some benefit in separating opportunity analysis (diamond) from analysis of resource mobilization challenges (square). Your observation that diamond-square can be mapped onto the BMC is right on target. I’ve essentially taken the elements of the BMC and recombined or disaggregated some of them, consistent with my view of what an aspiring entrepreneur (or investor) should focus on. For example, “Key Resources” is disaggregated into Cofounders, (rest of the) Team, and Investors, since fit with the opportunity for each resource category is so crucial to venture success. That, in my view, is the biggest difference with BMC — and I hope one that provides a helpful tool for entrepreneurs.”
