INITIATIVE: STE(a)M for ASD – Regular Community Catchup (Program Design)

Active July 30, 2024 – August 31, 2024

Provided by Urban Maker

The aim is to generate a program which enables the ASD community to network and socalise around making and creating within a MakerSpace environment. A general overview is as follows:

The intent is to provide a place where young (and old) minds can roam free to be creative, using the free community resources available within this awesome space (see pics). An overview of the regular catchup is as follows:

  1. Provide a place for likeminded ASD peeps to play in a place that supports STE(a)M learning, in a fun way.
  2. Provide an opportunity for parents/care givers to understand (including learn if you wish) their child’s technical mindset, through trying new STE(a)M experiences, in a guided and exploratory way, at their own pace.
  3. Provide an opportunity for those with ASD to support others with ASD in a physiologically safe and sensory controlled environment.
  4. Connect and network with those in our unique community.
  5. Learn new skills including:

a. Creative software programs (Tinkercad, Blender, SculptGL, ChatGPT, MS Co pilot and others)
b. 3D printing
c. Laser etching
d. 3D scanning
e. Sewing machine
f. CriCut (stickers, custom shirts and other cool stuff)
g. Using/Building/fixing computers
h. Basic electronics
i. Any other skills parents or others can bring.
This isn’t just for the kids, but for anyone who supports someone with ASD.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PARTICIPATE

  1. To meet likeminded people, both at the child and adult level within their local community
  2. Understand the benefits of a local MakerSpace for learning STE(a)M topics, and for those who home school, be introduced to a free community resource that can support the development of their child’s STEM skills and knowledge.
  3. Hang out and be creative, either on their own (supported by a parent) or with others.
  4. Learn technical or artistic skills in a cool, fun and safe way, which also link to learning outcomes in schools and future job skills.

ELIGIBILITY
